Tutorial

Post by duane »

It's not the best documented. But if you read though the sample text files they seem to help. im just starting to ask quesions myself. I am slowly making progress with it.

Unfortunately, the language that both G-Force and WhiteCap use to translate difficult config documents into awesome spectacles of light, sound, and motion isn't based on HTML.
Rather it uses a specialized form of C++...along with a big-time sprinkling-on of arithmetic-, algebra- and trig-based functions.

It may be of some comfort to you that as one who *really* stinks at math, I have spent much time (kinda) mastering the langauge that goes into making configs for G-Force.
Having said that, I agree that the Help docs aren't as simple at first blush as they should be; and IMHO a radical simplification of how to explain the overall GF language is due.

As an idea, I'd consider it helpful to add brief, commented-out tutorial to the Prefs file docs rather than offering bloviated explanations via the online documentation.

Mind you, I'm not calling for chucking out the online stuff altogether (at least not *just yet*); but rather than foisting upon the the user the inconvenience of hopping online when he wants to edit preferences, or make scripts & configs *now*, the Pref files would be right there with a simple mouse-click to offer understandable explanations to questions like,

"Oooooooooooh...what does *this* function do?????" ::God-Awful Dee-Dee impersonation mode off::

Better yet, and *infinitely more easy* to do:
Why not just have the Docs available as simple text files? Why hop onto the Net unnecessarily? Isn't convenience for the user what we ought to be after?

I would hope that making the Docs a bit more first-time-user/math-challenged-person friendly is seriously considered once Andy gets settled and we get beyond the royal scramble to get GF 3 out the proverbial door.

"God is syntax."
