Whitecap 474 Won't Recognize WMP11 on Install
Okay, so I used to have Whitecap 474 on my WMP, grant it it was a trial version, but I still loved all effects it had on it.
I have kept the original install with me since I first got it from this very site, and install everytime I get a fresh system, or have to reformat. I had it running on this computer just fine yesterday, and it worked beautifully.
But since then I went ahead and Cleared everything for a clean install because my rig was having issues with missing installation files.
I have everything back in order and all my drivers installed and whatnot, with WMP11 installed and running, and I would like to have my Whitecap back.
I grab the original Whitecap 474 and run the installer.
I hit a snag everytime I get to the Host Program selection, which I never had before. The installer has every available program greyed out, even WMP and thus will not install at all. What's the problem?
I downloaded 505 and it worked fine, installed, and I can use it, but I liked 474 visualizations better and I really want it back.
Why won't the installer recognize my WMP11? Is there a setting somewhere that I am missing or changed during my reformat?
I am running Windows Vista Ultimate, and a SoundMAX Driver, but I was running the rig before with Whitecap working.
Please help. I want the lips and the japanese flag back.
Thanks.

Is there a certain codec I need? I already have DivX and a h.264 codec.
I really like to get it working again.
pretty sure WC doesnt use "codecs" so you dont need to worry about that.
uninstalling the vis and then deleteing its parent folders located in program files soundspectrum and docs &settings/application data/ a second soundspectrum folder resides. delete white cap from both and then restart your computer and then do a fresh install.
you must delete all traces of the old installation , sometimes the version number doesnt match and it causes problems like you describe.
I hope it helps as its helped others

Well I did what you said to do. I deleted said folders, and did a search to see if anything else turned up as Soundspectrum or Whitecap. From what my computer told me, I seemed to have gotten all of it.
However Vista is odd about its User folders. There could have been something somewhere that might be hidden.
Anyone using Vista know where I might be missing something?
Oh yeah, I forgot to say, after trying that fix and restarting, it still would not show WMP as an option to choose.
Does the installer refer to a specific folder to look for WMP? I think Vista would install WMP to a different folder. Mine is 64 bit. I have like two different program folders. It could be referencing mishap in the installer that which Vista moved WMP to a folder not in the reference.
Are there any registry keys I need to worry about? Would that keep it from installing if anything were written to the registry?
What about ffdshow? I downloaded that before I tried to install 474. What ffdshow does is monitor programs that run various codecs and utilizes the player to play something like h264. Could that be blocking the installer from seeing WMP?
Poo. Thanks for the help juxtiphi. I really do appreciate it. But I still have yet to find out how to get it to work yet.
I wish I knew how the installer worked to reference things.

first I suggest that you upgrade to the latest version of whitecap = 505 if that doesnt work then, I would say that its a conflict with vista, whitecap itself does not hide anything when installing so thats not it.BlackSlimeMan wrote:Well I did what you said to do. I wish I knew how to help you other users whom also use vista had problems when it first came out, GF and whitecap seem very finicky when dealing with newer systems. hang in there Andy has always made good when the installers were acting up. I suggest you open a support ticket you may get a better responce through that avenue as these forums are not monitored by soundspectrum on a daily basis.

I'll try that and see what I come up with. 505 does work fine when I install it, but I like 474 much better, and that's the one I really would like to have again. The funny thing is is that the 474 I have was just a trial, but I like it so much for just being that, because it still did so much.
I don't get it either. It was running on this system perfectly before, but after my reformat it just would not install any longer.
Thanks anyway. I'll try a support ticket. It probably is a difference in my system that keeps bugging it out.

I filed a ticket and didn't get a response I liked. There is no support for the older 474 version of Whitecap, because they are more dedicated to the newer improved 5.xxx versions.
Point blank: I don't like any of the 5.xxx. I don't like the new slides, and I don't like the menu system. I don't like the new color schemes. And there seems to be less slides in the waveform menu than what 474 was capable of doing. There are only four pages of slides in 5.xxx and the lips and the flags I haven't seen turn up yet.
I don't want 5.xxx. I just want my 474 to work again, but there doesn't seem to be a solution. I just don't understand why it won't run on the exact same system now that it ran on before.
This sucks. I can't have my trustworthy visual plugin back.

sorry to hear that imho the new whitecap is way better than the older versions but I know we all have different tastes.
all I can suggest (and Im guessing here) is that when you try to reinstall the old version which you said worked fine make sure there are no traces of the newer version left at all . it seems to me that installing a new version looks to the old prefs file for setting changed by the user and this sometimes causes problems when overwriting the new prefs file because for some reason the install does'nt update the version number of the prefs file correctly so there is a conflict.
I know this is a 2 year old topic, and you probably will never read this, but perhaps there are other people (like me) who miss their old WhiteCap 4.7.4, so I decided to post the solution here.
First, uninstall any newer versions of WhiteCap.
Now you'll need to trick the installer into installing its base files. For this, temporarily install a random supported player, like foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/).
Now launch the Whitecap 474 installer, and select foobar2000. This way WhiteCap will be installed, but not yet registered with WMP.
Ddownload 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/).
With 7zip you can open the installer (right-click it and select 7zip > Open archive). Now navigate to the $R0 folder and copy WhiteCap_WMP.dll into your 32-bit Windows Media Player\Visualizations folder.
On 32bit systems, this folder can regularly be found in C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player\Visualizations.
On 64bit systems it can be found in C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player\Visualizations.
Now the visualization must be registered in the registry.
- Click the start button.
- In the search box, type the following:
or on a 64bit system:
- Hold Ctrl and Shift and press Enter. You will have to give UAC permission to continue.
- A dialog box should come up saying the DLL got registered.
Open up WMP and select the WhiteCap visualization. It should work perfectly.
You can now remove the temporary media player (foobar2000).
