G-Force & Windows Vista

My guess is the Vista drivers for your audio card are not reporting all the available audio input sources. See if the card manufacturer has updated drivers in the next few days. The bigest problem with Vista right now is that various hardware device manufacturers have not done a good job with their Vista drivers.

My driver is up to date and I still get no choices except Microphone. This only happened since Vista.

As mentioned above, this is likely to be a problem with your audio drivers. We are finding that many of the new Vista audio and video drivers are not functioning properly and this is causing problems for some of our users.

The way G-Force works is that it asks the operating system what audio sources are available and G-Force then lets you select from these available sources. To the extent that the audio driver is broken and it consequently tells the OS that the Microphone is the only available audio source available (as you indicated), then you will need to wait until your audio card manufacturer releases updated audio drivers for Vista. I am sorry that we don't have a better solution (other than suggesting that you go back to XP), but this is really a hardware / driver problem and not a problem with G-Force.

We are also having a similar problem with some video drivers. Certain Vista video drivers seem to be telling the OS they support graphics acceleration when the actually don't and this consequently causes problems with G-Force (conflicts with Aero, etc.) but this is something we can fix by turning off our graphic acceleration (OpenGL) capabilities. G-force generally seems to work ok with vista except for the following problem:

After WMP has been minimized to the toolbar if I click the small circle labeled "Show Video and Visualization Window," WMP crashes explorer. This doesnt happen with any other visualization plugin... only G-force... I hope this is fixed in the next version...

My G-Force Platinum works just fine with WMP under Vista (32-bit Home Premium); I keep it as the only visualiser enabled. My problem is when I try and use Media Centre, which seems to take it's settings from WMP so it comes as a bit of a surprise. With G-Force set as the only visualiser, when I try to play an album I get "Unknown Audio Error" and a message suggesting I re-start Media Centre and/or the PC. If I just leave it at this point, after about 30 seconds or so the music plays but there's no visualisation. I'll be grateful for any tips.

I'm running Vista Ultimate & GeForce Platinum latest edition for Win Media Player.
I generally dont have any issues -
I had it running fine & I have Vista certified drivers for my sound card & video card, so they're a non-issue.
Windows Defender got its panties in a wad at some point during / or right after the GForce Install but I was allowed to 'PERMIT' the operation & that shut it up.

(I have Aero enabled & UAC disabled.)

THAN
I noticed my sprite images werent showing up as vividly as I wanted-
So I launched the GForce standalone app and something Vista-ish happened -
like it got pissed about trusting my audio source and
dropped me out of Win Media Player and GForce and crashed WinExplorer.

I rebooted - which with Vista takes forever - I dont care what kind of box you have - its a hog!

Now Media Player sees GForce - but G Force standalone doesnt see my audio source: WMP.

I think I'm going to uninstall/remove dirs and reg entries / than reinstall

I'll report if I find anything helpful along the way...

That is not strictly true Key there are options for Vista.

Vista by default disables many of the sound options. It is not necessarily the sound card drivers fault as they may have written drivers for the card (I know not all have but many have now)

It appear that Vista has "hid" the waveout/stereoOut/What I hear/etc (all soundcards call it something different) sound source by default and you have to un-hide/re-enable them.

It still depends on if the sound card driver if they have created them but many should work with the latest drivers in Vista.

Makes it more of a nightmare to get working though when explaining to pick up the sound out in Vista.

Summary:
Newer Dell hardware for Vista (and other manufactures) machines won't support "stereo mix"/ 'what you hear' input devices.

So if you want the Stand Alone and V-bar (the big bangs for the gold/platinum) for sites/sources that need those input devices, don't expect to be able to use them on many of the new Dell (and other) systems.

There are 'hacks' that involve trying to install XP driver versions or doing an ''output to input patch cord' - but the hacks don't work for all hardware combo's and that patch cord????

Just an FYI.

SoundSpectrum has a stellar product but are at the mercy of MS and the hardware makers.
