Standalone version and Input source?

I am a new user and have a quick question.

I want to use the standalone version and use a source for the music, streaming internet radio (Yahoo, Music Engine).
I have found how to change the input source with shift-a. But I do not get a choice for a non-external source. The choice I get are the three demo songs, rear line in, rear digital in, and front line in.
Am I out of luck on getting this to work or is there some setting in winxp or maybe my soundcard?
