How to save set up with toolbar?
Moderators: BTT, andy55, b.dwall, juxtiphi
Hello All
.....and that is the whole point of my argument. With the previous version of the Toolbar there was an option to save your custom selections. SoundSpectrum removed that option when (I believe) they introduced that cumbersome UI which to the best of my knowledge does not have an option to save custom settings. SoundSpectrum seem to think it's a good idea to have to customise the program using the UI each and, every time you load G-Force.

From information gleaned in this forum,it appears from all this that I'm supposed to edit in the various elements in the UI going back and forth as Juxtiphi described to try to remember what elements I am using. His suggestion of moving a preview button next to the selection box makes some sense. But given the complexity of the rest of the process as gleaned from a back-and-forth with sound spectrum, I think this thing is too complex to be saved without drastic surgery.
I submitted a question and went back and forth with them to determine how to save it. And how to save it in more than one setup. The conversation made it clear that "documentation" was being produced as we communicated which leads me to wonder how much support is really available for this product from a source near the analyst who did the revision (or for that matter the earlier version.) Soundspectrum ought to spend a little time on this if they want to make money on it.
In a nutshell; It is suggested that I can exit each time and go into Appsdata/blah-blah-blah. There is also a suggestion of renaming multiple categories different, apparently from multiple themes that I am not sure I understand. There may be some relationship between current Custom Category for element x and Current Custom theme (something about "including" it in the current theme...).
For myself, I am wondering if I want to bother. The idea that a consumer level product (or for that matter, professional level one that I deal with in my place of business) that doesn't offer a save/save-as button SOMEWHERE (ANyWHERE!) should seem as unusable as, say, a Word Processor that could only store one document or a Browser that makes you dig down into the directory structure over and over to get to different websites.
Read on if you have the patience. I don't think I do.

I think you asking about how to save Custom Categories? They should be saved every time you close G-Force. Go check by clicking on the Category box above the Edit button. If you'd like them to be the Active Category, create a new Theme (in the Settings menu) and include your Custom Category in the Theme. (????) Then make your new Theme the Active Theme. You can set this to be your Startup Theme in the Settings menu, too.

You can rename Themes easily by going to "...\AppData\Roaming\SoundSpectrum\G-Force\Themes", and renaming your Theme files. Open the renamed file, find the line “ThemeName = "(Custom Theme)"” and change it to your file name. Please, let me know if this needs any clarifying!
If you’d like to create multiple (Custom) Categories, go to "...\AppData\Roaming\SoundSpectrum\G-Force". Go to the folder for the Visual Element that you would like to create more Categories for, and open the (Categories) folder. Copy the “(Custom)” file, and paste it in the same folder. Make sure you rename your new file! Something descriptive will help you later. Open the file, find the line “CategoryTitle = "(Custom)"” and change it to your file name. Again, if you need any help, let me know!
Please let me know if there's anything more that I can do to help you. And if there's parts of the above description that are hard to understand, or are especially helpful, let me know! I want to include this in our documentation soon.[/b]

Back when G-force started I was wowed over and over because just letting G-force go was always entertaining. With just a few touches of the slider I could slow down or speed up to my liking which helped make a unique experience. Saving themes was easy and they used to offer what they call Black Colormaps, which were maps with a lot of dark colors. To me this theme was key. i am not a great fan of the lighter colormaps that create a very bright background.
Now I feel that even with the standard theme running it all seems very generic instead of magic. its still pretty but somehow just not as fun anymore. also with the toolbar you can control G-force from another monitor without effecting the visual seen onscreen. With this UI you have to interrupt whats happening onscreen. I know there are key board commands but I would rather just click the advance buttons in the toolbar from my second monitor to make changes instead of using the keyboard.
To me the functionality and ease of the toolbar was key!
Hi rnb,
I think there's been some miscommunication, which is why I encouraged you to ask for clarification so often. I really wish you had read my responses to you, instead of just reacting.
Please note that none of what was in my reply is necessary in creating your own Theme or Category. I don't want to confuse any of our users. However, if you would like to rename a Theme (which is what you asked), read the first paragraph. The second paragraph is just extra information, in case you would like to create extra Custom Categories (which can make up Themes).
It seems that you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how G-Force is organized. I would encourage you to read the documentation, at the link below:

Hi juxtiphi,
If you'd like to adjust the speed of your G-Force visualizer, you should go into Settings. Adjust the Setting known as "Target Frame Rate" and "Audio Response Scale" to your desired liking. I believe that this feature has not been taken from the toolbar.
The ColorMaps now feature a Category called "Bright Backgrounds." Go edit your favorite Themes, and put a red minus next to it. This will exclude any Bright Backgrounds from your visuals. You can also recreate the Black ColorMaps yourself. One of the strengths of G-Force is the customization. I would encourage you to take advantage of it, and create the G-Force that you want!

Hi Everyone else,
Everybody on this forum should know that I work within arm's length of our developers. You have all frequently requested improved documentation, and I am working to improve it. That being said, it seems that this confused rnb. I will continue to work, and see if I can make it clearer. If you would like to collaborate on this, I would be happy to work with you.
There is no save button in the UI, because there is no need for one. Any changes you make to your Themes and Categories are saved automatically. Many new users don't realize that once they make a Custom Category, it is not automatically activated. Put your Custom Category into a Theme, and make that Theme active.
It seems that there is a great deal of confusion about how to create and save your own Custom Themes and Categories. So, for the next two weeks, I'll be checking this forum everyday, and looking for any questions about how to use G-Force. If you have any polite question at all, or any reasonable input, I will see it and respond to it.
In the meantime, enjoy the software! Explore the UI! Create some of your own Scenes, ColorMaps, WaveShapes, FlowFields, Themes and Categories! Share them with each other!

I know how the basic UI controls work, they aren't the problem. Frankly (no pun intended) I dont understand how to use the theme editor itself.
I managed to customize the colormaps, to do it I just went in checked the boxes I wanted and that somehow did it. how to use the the editor the way you suggested is confusing to me. don't know why but it is.
you said "Put your Custom Category into a Theme, and make that Theme active." I don't know how to do that. The explanation seems convoluted. aren't my custom colormaps a theme already?
Hello Frank
Program with UI released 06 May 2013 and still no documentation?. If I understood the UI I would be more than pleased to help with documentation. Of course if the UI had not been forced on us then we would not be in this situation. As I have said before, why doesn't SoundSpectrum get it? the UI is not wanted by G-Force users. Just restore the save theme option in the toolbar and everyone will be happy, and by the sound of things you will have less users asking for help. I am probably one of the most loyal people when it comes to G-Force, and I take no pleasure in making negative posts, but I believe I speak for the majority of G-Force users.
Could you not re-release version 4.3.2 which was stable, reliable, had a save theme option in the toolbar and no complicated and unwanted GUI?. It would certainly make your customers happy. Do you not care about what the users want?

Hi Guys,
I'll get started on making clearer documentation and explaining the Theme Editor better right away.
Of course we care about what you guys want, you're a great community and you've supported us for years. We can't just release and maintain an old build of our software, because users want new content. It's a balancing act, bringing new and exciting ideas to SoundSpectrum while honoring and maintaining the original features that brought us all together. Sometimes the balance sways one way or the other, but we've always restored it.
