Well, I am truly up the creek without a paddle -

Using v4.0 I did not experience any problems, GF was a joy to behold.

Then along came v4.1 which for some reason or other on my system reduced the FPS significantly.

Only days later v4.1.1 was released, this version was giving more detail than I require in Verbose mode.

Logic told me not to use v4.1 because of the poor FPS, not to use v 4.1.1 due to the extra and, to me unnecessary text in Verbose mode but, to go back to using v4.0.
After installing v4.0 again, thinking this would resolve the issues with v4.1 and v4.1.1- I am now getting a 'NAG' screen informing me that there is a newer version of GF available.

Please believe me, I love GF and, have supported Andy as far back as 1998 - 2000 when he was an officer in the US Navy. I have submitted approx 150 ColorMaps over that time and, am proud to say that Andy has chosen to include some of these in GF.

However, I am now in a situation where I can no longer enjoy all that is glorious about GF due to recent changes.

minor inconveniences... you will (most likely) be happy again in no time :P . I just got that update message TODAY, for the FIRST time ... I have never seen it before ... ALSO when it gets announced, I see an extra 'thingy' added to the toolbar(?!?).... back to YOUR situation. Under Toolbar Preferences, there always(?) has been a 'check for updates (weekly)' option ... I just kind of think NOW it actually works! Why not try to UNCHECK that option  ! Since I actually went and downloaded 4.1.2, I of course don't get nagged ... just a thought ... ALSO generate a support ticket and express your opinion about the info format verbose used to display. It should be a very easy option to add/resurrect ... (make sure to mention that YOU think that logging that info to a file in a timestamped format would be very helpful  )

I have today generated a support ticket in a very polite and courteous manner. I also suggested logging the configs loaded into a file would be welcomed by many.

I apologise for my negative post, I just hate it when things get changed and, not for the better.

BTT!

Ugh, it pains me to see one of our star contributors having problems, so I want to make it my mission to get to the bottom of what's going on with performance on your machine.

Couple things:

- Please download and install 4.1.2 and see if there's any change
- Please post your SHIFT+i info from 4.1.2 (SoundSpectrum Log.txt on your desktop)

We'll get this thing!!

Andy

Hello Andy

Thank you for your post and, your e-mail. I can confirm that the FPS under 4.1.2 is as good as 4.0.

After playing around all day, I have (I think) found the cause of the problem. When running GF, I prefer to have 'Auto Config Display' active and, asked for help on the Forum how to achieve this using Winamp. The following reply allowed me to do just that.

Code: Select all

GF Auto Config Display

are you talking about Verbose Mode?. It isn't currently available in Winamp. I assume because it conflicts with Winamp's use of 'v' ...

If you always want it on, just edit :

'\Program Files\SoundSpectrum\G-Force\Resources\Common\Startup.txt'

and add:

SetVerboseMode( 1 );

to the end of the file.

This worked perfectly in 4.0 giving me the loaded configs as below:-

ColorMap:Juice
WaveShape:Rotating Bars
FlowField:Blaze

However, adding the same code to 4.1.1 and 4.1.2 changed the display to:-

ColorMap.Most Recent.Name=Juice
ColorMap:Juice
WaveShape.Most Recent.Name=Rotating Bars
WaveShape:Rotating Bars
FlowField.Most Recent.Name=Blaze
FlowField:Blaze

The 'Auto Config Display' was a feature in GF for many years. Myself, and, I know many other users regard this as part of the GF experience.

I do not understand the inner workings of GF, I just want to relax in my favourite chair listening to good music and, watching GF in action, with of course the 'Auto Config Display' fully operational.

I am now feeling guilty of taking up yours and, members of the Forum's time complaining about a non existent fault in GF. I tender my sincere apologies to ALL.

This is a good discussion and has given me the motivation to add a new feature where newly loading configs are drawn in the bottom right corner of the screen and will fade in and fade out nicely. If folks here like this idea and would use it, I'll happily add that.

Thoughts?

Andy

P.S. Things have been nutty the last few weeks for what we're about to release!! So good things are coming within days!! :)

Well, it's only chance that I saw this thread, and as we repeatedly tell people, the forums are NOT officially monitored by SoundSpectrum. I can guarantee that you'll get better luck filing a ticket than using the forums most of the time. That said, there are several SoundSpectrum-appointed moderators and enthusiasts here who do an exceptional and selfless job of helping fellow users in need. As I have said many times in the past, these individuals deserve a great deal of credit while we at SoundSpectrum are pushing hard on bugs, ticket support, new features, and new products.

In a couple days, you'll see this backed up by more than words!
