Question about spammers

Post by markofkane »

Who keeps opening spam posts? Every time I check, spam posts have at least 3 views.

Also, do you realize that if you click on spam links, you may get a computer virus, or a trojan??

Be careful.

I see the same thing and I've been wondering as well. I remove spam all day long from this site, I think they now have live spammers who keep checking to see if the links have been removed.

I do too. I have a theory:

The spammers get paid when someone clicks their links. They have others in their "club" to do that, I think. Unless they get paid to click their own links.

It's a shame spammers are too lazy to get a real job. :? :?

I delete them too, although I don't check the board as often as you guys. Gotta get some work done ;) Anyway, we've had a discussion about this in an old thread:

If it really gets out of hand, we can revisit it. Meanwhile, many thanks for keeping an eye out for the spam posts!

Only the admin. can ban him, or block him. We mods don't have that power.

I removed that user, but this is a moot point--usually the spammers create a name, use it a couple of times, and then abandon it.

Yeah, you are right. I have more power at another forum I mod, and spammers just keep replacing spam and accounts I remove with more. It's a never ending battle. :x

There might be a way to stop most spammers.

In banning email addresses, use *.info as a filter.

Not sure if it will work all of the time, and also, anyone with the .info address will be blocked. I am trying it at another forum, to see how it goes. 8)

*.info has been banned for many months. We also have many other filters in place besides that one. Yep, it's a neverending battle :(

He needs banned and IP blocked.

Also, there are a lot of new members who are spambots.

Not to burst your bubble, but I wouldn't get too giddy about it. Spambots have been constructed with capabilities that make them seem almost human. I'll make a wager that the post title was done by the spammer and the post itself was the bot. I've seen this exact kind of thing dozens of times here while cleaning up the boards.
PS: FWIW, I syuspect that the origin of the spam activity here is from Russia. The original text comes up garbled when filtered thru this site, yes, but I have my reasons to suspect this. Again, FWIW...
