Hi Jaypro. It wasn't very nice of you to lock "Reminders From Your Friendly Neighborhood Moderator...", so that only the first few replies were recorded, though I can see why you did it. It could be a very hot topic! But I do have an opinion on the subject, and I feel that it deserves to be voiced! Hence, this 'new topic'...
I agree with you wholeheartedly. Everyone should be entitled to his/her opinion and should be allowed to express that opinion. As expressed by Francois Marie Arouet (a.k.a. Voltaire) about 250 years ago, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."... Right on, M’sieur Arouet!
Everyone is entitled to express his/her opinion, even if it is a (expletive deleted) stupid one. I am also entitled to tell that (expletive deleted) person that his (expletive deleted) opinion is (expletive deleted) stupid, as long as I tell him/her nicely, or at least without a bunch of (expletive deleted) cuss words and I don't delve into my opinions about his/her genetic background, personal hygiene, or social habits. Nice is good!
Take care.

Toby;
As you correctly assumed, the reason for my locking the topic is so that none of us (myself included) would get all bogged down with arguing my original thread to kingdome come.
However, I feel compelled to defend my decision for locking it in that
1. I was going to be out all day at the time; and by the time I'd returned, I'd most likely forget what I was supposed to do.
2. I have a nasty habit of not holding true to what I tell either myself or others I would do.
I appreciate BTW your trying to see it "my way", as it were. Not that I'd *demand* it to be seen as my way, of course. I just phrased it that way for want of a better term.
So yes...looking back on it, I was a bit hasty in lokcing it so soon. Quite frankly, I was anticipating whatever response you might have had to be reply numero uno. I'm sure it would've been just as interesting as the post you've got here.
Anyway, on the citation of Voltaire on your part...touché! Though I must admit that I'm not exactly a fan of his particular philosophy, especially regarding his most famous verbal contribution to the science of debate and polemics, I still won't begrudge you the opportunity to consider him right.
I hope this doesn't come across as flattery of any kind; but I do like your style. And the last thing I wanna do is tell anyone from Texas he's wrong, coz I can't stand pain.
A bit more seriously...
I also hope you understand that I'm not trying to reduce the quality of debate here to some kinda "gosh n' golly-gee whiz" Beaver Cleaver banality. I think it's okay to be humanly honest in sharing opinions here (Indeed, that's what a "community" in this sense is supposed to reflect and folks like you are indispensable members of it); but as has already been discussed ad nauseam, it behooves us all to scope out the proverbial borders. And I don't want you (in particular) to think that you've been in any way neglectful in that regard.
Have an (expletive deleted) nice day...

"God is syntax."
Hi JayPro... I wasn't chastising you for locking it... if you hadn't done so, it might have turned into a shooting war, and that just ain't nice. Just ask any of our troops in Iraq. I wouldn't blame you for locking this thread, as well... or just trashing it completely. I just wanted to add my two bits worth, and you made it so that this was the only way I could do so.
For what it's worth, my Old Man, bless his dear departed soul, didn't cuss much, but he always told me that I should always call a spade a "f---ing shovel", if you know what I mean, and that's what I do. If someone says something stupid, I feel that I am entitled to criticize, just as I am entitled to laud someone who says something of particular brilliance... and everything in between.... but I do, however, always try to limited my criticism to whatever level that the the stupidity deserves.
Take care.
