6.2.4 Gold... plus & minus

Post by Toby »

 I just upgraded from 6.2.2 Gold to 6.2.4 Gold after only having GF for a week TOTAL! Version history doesn't note any improvement in the engine, BUT 2.4 appears to run a lot more efficiently than 2.2. Did an improvement sneak in? I'm running Windows XP-Pro on a Dell Inspiron-8500 laptop with a 2.2 GHz P4, 512 MB, and a 1920x1200 screen and 2.2 running in a 3x5" window under Musicmatch would pretty much keep the CPU maxxed out all the time if I was doing anything else, even non-intensive processor stuff, to the extent that I wouldget music skips and GF action dropouts. Under 2.4, I can run a 5x7" window, with everything else about the same, and total CPU usage averages about 75%, depending on what's playing, and I don't think I've seen it peg even once in over an hour... quite an improvement !!! That's more than twice the image with 25% less load.

NOW THE DOWNSIDE !!!
Nowhere in the documentation does it say that the new installation totally blows away the old directory tree. For Shame !!!

Luckily, I backed everything up before doing the install, or I would be a very unhappy camper, since I was starting to play with some of the configs, and all would have been lost. Future installation needs to have an option to back up old files or at least give you a warning and the option of cancelling so you can back up manually before finishing the install.

All in all, I am ecstatic over GF! It IS impressive! Though I DO tend to just sit and stare dumbly at the screen instead of doing whatever it is that I'm supposed to be doing... oh yeah... trying to learn how to write configs... yeah, that's it...

To Andy, and all the contributors too, you done a great job! Salute !!!

It's just a good thing that G-Force wasn't around in the '60s, or EVERYONE would have been druggies! Or perhaps... no one would have been! Who needs drugs when you can sit an stare at all them pretty pictures while totally straight!

thanks for all the kind words! I'm glad ya like it!

You're right about the getting rid of the old dir--shame on me... the issue was that pre-2.6 versions had a folder structure that isn't compatible w/ the 2.6 and later... i'll have to figure something out.
