Problems with installing 2.6.8 Gold on multi-boot machine

Post by dsperber »

I have both Win98 (on C) and WinXP (on M). Winamp and G-Force are installed in both environments.

I just installed G-Force Gold 2.6.8 in my WinXP environment, and noticed first that the install choices for both Winamp 2 and Winamp 5 were selected. This is incorrect, as I don't have Winamp 5 installed.

I unchecked the Winamp 5 box and clicked OK to begin the install.

After completing the installation (remember this is my WinXP on M environment) I started Winamp and was surprised to see the logo for G-Force still displayed 2.6.7. I looked in the program directory (on M) and noticed that the file dates were from several weeks ago.

Then, on a hunch, I looked in the program directory on C (where Win98 lives) and saw that sure enough the install process had mistakenly gone to that C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\G-Force directory... not to the M version which was appropriate for my WinXP environment.

I will manually copy the files from C to M, but obviously this new installation method (which supports installing into both Winamp 2 and Winamp 5, something it never did before) needs to be a bit more clever about determining the boot drive for \Program Files.

Or, if off-drive locations for \Program Files is to be supported perhaps adding a confirmation step in the install dialog to allow me to confirm or change the presumed target location would be a good idea.

Well, I think there might be something else wrong.

My PREFS file shows "Comic Sans MS" as my text font. This change worked just fine up through 2.6.7. However now in 2.6.8 it is being ignored and the default "MS Sans Serif" appears.

This might have something to do with the wrong target location for my 2.6.8 install and the fact that I manually replaced the G-Force directory in my WinXP environment, but I'm pretty sure I didn't leave any loose ends.

So unless the PREFS file being used is not the one which is located in m:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data I don't know how else to explain this anomaly.

Perhaps I should wait for the corrected installer which targets my WinXP version of G-Force (instead of the Win98 version) in the WinXP environment and try this again.

Th answer is that the prefs file location in 2.6.8 has changed to:

C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\

(and is no longer in the All Users\Application Data). This was done b/c many windows users were never able to find the the prefs file because their view (and search) mode doesn't look inside invisible folders (such as Application Data).

Well that explains the font mystery, and now I know where PREFS is newly located.

However I still point out that my WinXP boot partition is M, not C. While you certainly placed the new PREFS file into M:\Documents and Settings\<user> you mistakenly installed the programs into my Win98 copy of C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\G-Force instead of on my M partition. This is definitely a problem with what I'm guessing is a new installation method for determining the target x:\Program Files location.

This necessitated a manual copy of the newly installed plugin files from incorrectly determined C location (under my WinXP) to M (along with a re-customization of PREFS in the new <user> location).

Andy,

I know you've seen my report already. But I just wanted to reiterate...

The 2.6.8 Gold install run in my WinXP environment mistakenly installed to the \Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\G-Force directory located on C, which is the WRONG PARTITION for my WinXP environment. It should have gone into this directory located on M which is the boot partition for my WinXP system.

C is my Win98 partition, and in fact certainly does have G-Force installed there in the C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins\G-Force. However C is NOT where the WinXP version should have installed.

Mistakenly installing the program onto C overlaid the existing Win98 version previously installed there, and failed to install into the M location where my WinXP version of Winamp will load the G-Force plugin from. So the effect was to leave 2.6.7 installed in WinXP, and install 2.6.8 into Win98 (which I wasn't really ready to do yet).

I feel this should be corrected. It's never happened before 2.6.8. Installing the plugin in WinXP always went to my M version of Program Files... never to the C version used for Win98.

I'll do my best to look at it. The bottom line is that installers are very tough and costly (time-wise) to maintain, espeically on Windows when there's so many possible setups. The fact that microsoft has a very poor track record of supporting developers that don't target their lastest and "greatest" flagship suites only makes dealing with these matters more daunting and time consuming. In contrast, Mac OS has a completely clean set of setup/install standards and tools and, more importantly, Apple offers (and actively maintains) a high quality and completely free installer-maker, perfectly suited for small developers like me--developers that should spend their time on innovation rather than making an installer.

Again, I'll do my best to look into this issue. Please email your email address if/when I have something to test out.

Thanks,
Andy

You should really look at NSIS as an installer. It is the Winamp/Nullsoft one and fully free and has a smaller footprint that the bloated InstallSheild one *shudder*. Can create some really nice installers.

http://www.nullsoft.com/free/nsis/

Has multiple languages too now so that could be useful for your distirubtion globally.

It is worth a look Andy. I can show you soem samples of my insatllers with it. I was involved in some reasonably complex ones for my friends IRC client.

Actually, that's what we're using. Thing is, there are so many setups and audio player registry nuances that there's a lot to maintain. The install script is a 32k test file to give ya an ides of how much is in there. fun.

thanks for thinking of the team, though.

It was hard to see what you are using as you removed teh embossed NSIS watermark that appears by default on most installers and have the icon of InstallSheild (Hence thinking it was Installsheild). :/

And you don't appear to be using the Modern skin interface that comes with NSIS 2 now. Maybe you don't like it.

I am confused though why you need different options for Winamp2 and Winamp5. I thought the uninstall path (what most take the app directory from) was the same for both at least that is what I have used.
