Standalone Version Latency

Post by Wombat66 »

I'm running G-Force Gold 2.7 standalone on a P4 2.4ghz computer, (Radeon 9600, 512MB Ram, Creative SB Live). No matter how much tweaking I've tried, I cannot reduce the latency to an acceptable level. The response of the graphics is considerably lagging behind the audio. Using a delay on a split of the external audio I've calculated the latency to be about 200ms. I've also tried a different sound card known for low latency (echo Layla) and get the same problem. However, when I run G-Force with MP3s in Winamp and Media Center, there is essentially no latency and everything looks great.

I'm interested in using G-Force with live music but the latency issue prevent this from working well.

Has anyone been able to succesfully get a low latency using external audio? If so, how did you do it? What hardware are you using?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

There will always be *some* latency when using a live feed compaired to recorded source. Though 200ms sounds far too long.

Your hardware is fine it is likely to be a software/driver setting.

I use winamp running all my visualizations live.

Here is a walkthrough we did for the winamp forums.

I think is is all relevant it has been a few years.

Thanks Rovastar!

This is great information, I'll give it a run through.

I do see on the Jasper Driver link that Jaspers says ASIO provides lower latencies than his Low Latency WaveOut Plugin for Winamp, so I'll take that route.

Hey there... Try setting PREF_FFT_FADE_AWAY (FFde) and PREF_FFT_SMOOTH (FSmo) in your prefs file to 0. To learn about them (and information on editing your G-Force prefs file), please see the "customizing" section of the G-Force docs. Beyond this, as Rovastar pointed out, some software drivers and OS mixer stuff can sometimes be responsible.

Andy

P.S. Rovastar, that's some good info--thanks for sharing that.

Thanks Andy! I'll give those settings a try.
