***iTunes 12.6 disallows 3rdPrty plugins pre-Sierra Macs***

Post by b.dwall »

Many SoundSpectrum customers have been recently experiencing the consequences of the latest iTunes 12.6 update, and have noticed that visualization plugins are no longer working properly or are completely missing. The update will affect folks differently depending on their circumstances.

If you are running OS X 10.11 (el Capitan) or earlier, and you rely on SoundSpectrum products to work in iTunes, the latest changes in iTunes 12.6 will impact you directly.

Apple has disabled 3rd-party plugins in iTunes 12.6 running on OS X 10.11 or earlier, citing security/QA reasons (without any specific details). If you have already upgraded to iTunes 12.6 or later, and you want to use our Visualization plugins in iTunes with as little hassle as possible, update to macOS 10.12 (Sierra) and your visuals should work again. We have made an appeal to Apple to restore compatibility of visualization plugins, but so far Apple has declined. Unfortunately, Apple does not provide an obvious or easy way for users to downgrade iTunes to earlier versions <terminal is required to delete iTunes files>.

If you rely on SoundSpectrum iTunes plugin and are running iTunes 12.5 or earlier on Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or earlier, DO NOT UPDATE TO iTUNES 12.6. All 3rd Party plugins will be greyed out or will not be visible at all.

If you are running iTunes 12.6 (or later) on Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan) or earlier, here are your options to restore visualization plugins in iTunes:
- Update to macOS Sierra (quickest option, but not for everyone)
- Start using SoundSpectrum’s Standalone application and/or replace iTunes with a different media player (best option all around IMO)
- Revert back to iTunes 12.5 (requires command line, but guides are available)
- Start a viral social media campaign or write to Apple and let them know “My third-party visualization plugins are not working in iTunes 12.6 while running a pre-Sierra version of OS X. I can't live without G-Force in iTunes...â€￾ and hope they restore visualization plugin support in a future version of iTunes (option requiring the most luck)

If you have a Retina Mac, we have new Retina compatible versions of all our products (which is the one nice thing to come out of all this). We are very sorry for the inconvenience and hope that you will let Apple know what you think about their latest decision to disallow plugins in iTunes (12.6) running on pre-Sierra versions of OS X.
