To Update or Not Update

Post by Daddo1 »

I just got my license renewal email from Soundspectrum. I'm not going to renew it because there really aren't enough updates to keep paying for.

Anyway, before I let my license expire, I am pondering downloading the latest version -4.4. I am only one version behind. I am hesitant though because I tend to find that when I download a new version certain changes revert - most particularly ones on the sprites folder - I get sprites back that I previously deleted. Additionally, there are sometimes other hiccups. I generally find the update process for G-force to feel risky and bit of a pain.

Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

G-force has come a long way and right now its seems to be waiting for the next release to implement the a new gui. Once that version comes there will be further updates when the guys at Soundspectrum come up with a new idea to make it better. if no ideas come then no updates and finding the files you deleted are now back after a fresh install is normal for any program. the installer does not know what you have deleted it just rights what its supposed to.

If you want to stop the files you deleted from coming back make a copy of all the folders you made changes in and then switch them out after the new install. :D

Hello Daddo1

There are many users who have downloaded G-Force 4.4 and have experienced various problems. To the best of my knowledge the issues have not been resolved. Most G-Force users uninstalled version 4.4 and returned to version 4.3.2, with many commenting this is the version they will stay with. Version 4.4 is also the last version of G-Force that will include the Toolbar, this too has upset many users. When G-Force version 5.0 is released it will have the Aeon style GUI.

Hope that helps with your decision making.

right - well this is another way of saying exactly what ONE (and only one) of my problems is - that G-Force really doesn't do a good job or give good tools for managing preferences - like what I choose to be in my sprites folder.

anyway, I appreciate the advice and it sounds like Soundspecturm has received my last $15.

Hello Daddo1

It certainly would be a good feature if SoundSpectrum program installers gave the user the choice to save your personal preferences and settings or to carry out a clean install. It would also be good to have the choice of where the programs are installed.

^^^ THIS is an absolutely fantastic idea.

I put all my personal stuff in their own (sub-)folders and just have to [remember to] move them out of the way before a new install. That is not to say, I haven't lost stuff in the process :?

Do you think 4.4 will ever get updated (fixed)? It would be a shame, if the last 'toolbar' version didn't represent a best and final effort. :(

PS: 4.3 existing issue, Sprites don't work UNLESS the toolbar is at least brought up... It doesn't need to remain running, but for example, 'StartRandomSprite();' DOESN'T WORK if the toolbar hasn't at least been started. Also, Shuffled Sprites (Slideshow) seem to run asynchronously to the GF engine proper... meaning a Sprite can be attempted to start outside the time allocated to process a 'typical' (WaveShapes, Particles, Flowfields, ColorMaps) GF frame - does that make sense?. When this happens, FPS can take a serious, visually perceptible, performance hit - even with CPU cycles to spare.

Hello Jerohm

Don't think so, I reckon before you know it G-Force version 5.0 will be released, just in time for the Xmas market.
