Bug Report: GF Screensaver & Extended Desktop (2nd Monit

Post by MitchellSTL »

Your System Information
Version of your OS: Win XP
Version of G-Force: 3.8.1
Version of your media player: Winamp
Graphics hardware info: Mobile Intel 965 Express Chipset
CPU info: Intel Core Duo T7100 @ 1.8
Other info: 2GB

From DX Diag
Primary Monitor: 1680 x 1050 (32 bit)
Secondary Monitor (laptop): 1280 x 800 (32 bit)

Detailed Description of Bug: When screensaver starts, primary monitor (external) has the GF images. Secondary monitor used to have all blue screen. Since upgrading to 3.8.1, the secondary monitor (the laptop) is all scrambled. Also, screensaver speed on primary monitor is severely reduced. When switching to single monitor mode (on either monitor) it is fine.

Description of How to Replicate Bug: Just start screen saver. Even happens when "preview" the screensaver.

go to the screensaver tab click settings and check span all displays and see if it helps

I selected span across monitors and both monitors then have it, but it still has a severe degradation in the speed (it's very jerky when its running). I tried it with SoftSkies screensaver - it was set up the same way as GF screensaver (i.e. do not span monitors). Is there a way to go back to a previous version?

the only way to go back to a previous version is to have saved the exe so that in case of an error you can uninstall current and reinstall old.

if you dont have the old exe then you're out of luck

Will I / we be notified if this has been fixed. Is there any kind of acknowledgment if it is a bug or if it will be fixed? Is there a bug tracker that this can be entered into???

I did find my 3.7.5 version and I will probably be downgrading it.

I notice that your screen res is different for both screens try making them the same size. sometimes the wrong computer settings can make GF crazy

also try shutting off direct 3d , do this by hitting the shift + D key while GF is running and then restart GF it will now be in open GL mode instead.

the only notification you'll get is if the GF toolbar checks for a new version and theres an update ready.

Andy works hard to make GF work in all players and platforms.

Well I have put 3.7.5 back on. I'm assuming it has to do with the extended monitor support. Because the "span" option was not available on 3.7.5. The degradation in speed has to be related to 3.8.1 as well. When running winamp or WMP11 with half the visualization on the primary and the other half on the secondary the degradation is there. Move it to just the primary and it's back at its quick pace. If I put the visualization on the secondary only, it's slow. GF 3.7.5 does not have any issues if it is on the primary only, secondary only or on both at the same time.

I just tried with 3.8.2 beta, but it didn't work. *sigh*

Turning off direct 3d did help when running the visualizer through winamp/wmp11, but it did not resolve the screen saver issues.

The screen saver still acts horribly when not using the "span option" (secondary monitor is garbage). When using the span option, the visualization uses most of the primary monitor and just a small fraction of the secondary. Its kinda like watching a 4:3 ratio on a widescreen tv - have these black bars on the side.

I could try to make the resolution, the same but why? my primary is a 24" lcd set on a resolution that the laptop screen can't handle. I'd have to set the primary to a resolution for the nearly blind. =) But just for grins, I tried it. Both were set at the lower resolution. With the no span option, secondary monitor still displayed garbage (and it flickered like crazy - thank goodness I don't have epilepsy!). With spanning turned on, it was still painfully slow across both monitors.

I will probably stick with 3.7.5 for the foreseeable future because I really want the screen saver to work. A solid color on my secondary monitor when the screensaver is more desirable...considering the alternative - my desktop all scrambled up & flickering but readable to anyone.

GF will not display anything on the second monitor unless you select span all monitors then its up to your graphics card to do the rest.

the only way to have the GF ss on both monitors is to have your desktop set to clone mode where each top shows the same thing I use dual view which creates two seperate tops so I can run apps on one and vis on the other.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS! 3.8.2 b5 rocks!

I tried 3.8.2 beta 5 the other day and it works MUCH better than the previous version. I still can't use Direct3d mode though, but the new monitor options work and the problems have been fixed (enough for me to renew my subscription that expires this weekend). The "primary monitor" works like it did before. The "Display on all monitors" is nice albeit a bit slow, but loving it since I have two completely different visuals going on. The "Span across all monitors" works but is very slow and it doesn't look "right" when spanned. So overall, I'm liking the beta. :D
