Error Code=18

Post by markofkane »

I am using the latest beta, 3.8b1.

It was working fine, then when opening just 15 minutes ago I got a large text saying "Error Code=18" and to reinstall G-Force.

I did, and it works, but why did that happen?

Thanks!!!

It did it again!!! Do I have to reinstall everyday??????

I am going to do a clean install to see if that helps.

Something else I've noticed: If I reload all of my extra sprites, colormaps and flowfields, G-force takes a real long time showing a viz, let alone the toolbar.

So for now, I am settling for the defaults.

Hey there... Yeah this is an issue I'm currently trying to figure out... I'm still at square one in that I'm trying to figure out the conditions that cause it, so if you see any patterns (or a way to regularly reproduce it), please let me know. Another report I've received says that restarting G-Force can clear the problem, but that obviously is only useful in hopefully getting me able to reproduce the problem over here. This is definitely a bug, so I wouldn't waste your time with doing a fresh install.

So anyone that sees this problem, please email me if you can figure out how to repeatedly reproduce the problem.

Also, how often does this happen? If it happens often, I think I may just send you a debug build to try.

Thanks,
Andy

When you have a sec, please download and unzip the following G-Force.dll and replace it with your existing one (in C:\Program Files\SoundSpectrum\G-Force):

http://55ware.com/G-Force.dll.zip

From there, start up G-Force and get it to show the error. If the error shows up right off the bat, do a fresh install, copy over G-Force.dll--the goal it to get it to run successfully and have it get the error code while using that test version.

When you're sure that you've seen you seen it run ok and show an error a couple times, please email me the file:

C:\Program Files\SoundSpectrum\G-Force\SoundSpectrum Log.txt

Thanks!

Thanks!! I'll try it. It's happened 2 days in a row. I did the fresh install, and it hasn't done it this morning after the fresh install. But if you believe a fresh install doesn't matter, I should get the error soon.

The past couple days, I have been using Limewire (I know, but I haven't downloaded any detectable malware yet, because I got AVG, and other anti-malware programs) to download old obscure songs you cannot find at itunes or any other online music store only)

I would preview the song in Limewire, and if it's not right, I delete it.

Then if I do save it, I will double-click on the mp3 to get it to open Windows, Media Player 11. Then that's when I got the error. (the song plays fine)
But I reinstall G-Force, and it works fine, I even reproduce my prior steps, but it still works!!

Yeah, just keep that replacement dll there over the next few days and hopefully we'll get it to repeat. I have a couple other users doing this as well, hoping that we see the problem again so I can look at that file... Perhaps doing a reboot may affect things?

If I can get the error to show up, I'll try rebooting. But so far, it won't give me the error with that new .dll file, and clean install of G-force. I even got all my flowfields and etc. added to the folders. I tried to make it give me the error again, but so far, no avail.

The new beta incorporates this test stuff, so you can disregard that test dll. Just download and install 3.8b2, start standalone, press SHIFT+i, exit it, and go about your usual business. If/when you see the error 18 thing, email me SoundSpectrum Log.txt from your Windows desktop (you can chuck the one in your G-Force folder).

Done!!!! I got the error about the second time I opened G-Force (beta, latest release b2?) I just emailed the log file. I don't understand it,. lol, but hopefully you can!! :D

Anyhoo, the only things I recall doing after the install of the beta was:

1. Compacted the registry with System Mechanic (required restart)

2. Stopping and starting explorer.exe a few times to check why it was using so much memory. (over 30,000 k)

3. Changed folder views from thumbnails to tiles which uses less memory, and chose "launch explorer windows in a separate process" in folder options. Then unchecked it.

4. Firefox automatically updated.

5. That's all I can remember.

I don't use the standalone often. I would have to check it out in fullscreen. I would think the ESCAPE button would work.

And to Andy: The Error 18 showed up in all players and screensaver. I reinstalled and so far no error 18.

I sent a log file after the G-Force reinstall and running itunes, with no error.

If there is another error needed, it may take some time.
