Full screen ignores WMC resolution

Post by Z0r0b »

My desktop resolution is 1360x768, but WMC is 1920x1080. When i start GForce inside WMC, it always runs at 1360x768 and ignores WMC resolution. This causes a mode change on my TV and also doesnt look as nice.

Ive tried forcing the resolution in the prefs file as well as through the toolbar, but that always shows desktop resolution only. It ignores WMC resolution.

Is this a GForce limitation?

Hello Z0r0b

How do I change the full screen resolution settings?

Your display device may show G-Force best in a resolution different than the default full screen resolution. 1024x768 is the default resolution because most monitors and projectors show it well and it yields good frame rates for typical setups. If you have a faster setup or use a display device that looks best in a particular resolution, you will want to change the full screen resolution mode. While running G-Force, press M (the key for "Switch full screen resolution") to step through the available full screen resolutions. Be warned that frame rate decreases as full screen resolution increases (because G-Force must process more pixels). Also, see "How can I increase frame rate?" in the Performance section. Note: some media players, such as Windows Media Player don't allow plugins to request a particular full screen mode, so any full screen settings that you alter (by pressing M or a pref file edit) will have no effect.

I have already tried the M key. None of the GForce keys work when the visualization is running inside windows media center. They only work inside windows media player and thats running in 1360x768, so it doesn't solve my problem. When i changed my desktop to 1920x1080 and run GForce, there were no performance issues for me and it looked awesome.

So what i want to know is, how can i FORCE GForce to run at a specific resolution? As already stated, setting the resolution in the config files had absolutely no effect. GForce is always running at the desktop resolution regardless of what I've tried. Are you saying from your last paragraph that this is a windows media player imposed restriction?

I may need to somehow script a desktop resolution change before launching windows media center and revert on exit. Running the desktop at 1920x1080 is just too tiny to read anything (and custom font sizes always have display issues with applications that don't support them properly).

Hello Z0r0b

This is the only other info I could find for you. If you need further help contact SoundSpectrum:-

How do I change settings for Windows Media Center?

Because Windows Media Center operates in a full screen environment and doesn't pass mouse clicks or keystrokes to the currently running music visualizer, there is no easy way to change any of the settings. So if you need to change your Media Center settings, you'll need to edit your G-Force Media Center prefs file with a text editor:

1.Ensure that WMC is exited and open your G-Force preference files (for Windows XP, located in C:\Documents and Settings\USER_NAME\ Application Data\SoundSpectrum\G-Force\ and for Windows Vista and Windows 7 in C:\Users\USER_NAME\ AppData\Roaming\SoundSpectrum\G-Force\.

2.Save your changes and start Windows Media Center and G-Force.

Well interestingly i found this in the Aeon FAQ:

Note: some media players, such as Windows Media Player don't allow plugins to request a particular full screen mode, so any full screen settings that you alter (by pressing M or a pref file edit) will have no effect.

That pretty much answers my question. It's WMP thats restricting the resolution.

Hello Z0r0b

Many thanks for sharing that information - at least now you know it's not G-Force causing the problem.

No worries. In the end i had no choice but to set my desktop resolution to 1920x1080 and play with the font DPI settings until i found a setting where i can still read everything on my TV. Somethings don't render nicely, eg. vista gadgets, but that should be solved when I eventually upgrade my media center to win 7.

I'm happy to report that through all of this I discovered (and purchased a gold license) Aeon. Wow, very impressed!
