G-Force Platinum 4.1.3 - Toolbar misbehaving badly!!

Post by dsperber »

Very anomalous behaviour with 4.1.3 G-Force Platinum toolbar.

(1) Current contents of "toolbar preferences.txt":

Audio.Preamp.Scale = 50
Audio.Response.Scale = 50
AutoStartVBar = 0
ColorMap.Interval = 50
FlowField.Interval = 50
FrameRate = 50
Particle.Duration = 50
Particle.Interval = 50
PrefsVersion = 350
Sprite.Duration = 50
Sprite.ExternalDir.IncludeSubDirs = ""
Sprite.ExternalDir.Path = 0
Sprite.Interval = 50
Theme.Name = "(All Configs)"
Toolbar.AdvancedDrawerOpen = 1
Toolbar.AlwaysOnTop = 0
Toolbar.AutoClose = 1
Toolbar.IconOptions = 0
Toolbar.Position.x = 401
Toolbar.Skin.Name = "Factory Blue"
Toolbar.StartMinimized = 0
Toolbar.ToolTips.Enabled = 1
Toolvar.Position.y = 528
WaveShape.Interval = 50

(2) Open Winamp, start playing a track. G-Force starts in its window, and toolbar opens as well.

However if I click on "Toolbar preferences" the dropdown shows that "start toolbar when G-force starts" is UN-CHECKED!!! Why is the toolbar starting if this option is UN-CHECKED??

(3) Furthermore, ALL THREE "lights" are red (waveshape, colormap and flowfield) and nothing is displayed in the blue areas! The toolbar is open, but inactive.

(4) If I then close the toolbar (with "X"), and RMB on the G-Force window and select "Launch the G-Force toolbar", the toolbar now launches, the three lights are red briefly and then change to green and the three current values start to display in the blue areas for them.

If I click on "toolbar preferences" the dropdown now shows that the "start toolbar when G-Force starts" item is somehow miraculously CHECKED!!!

(5) Close Winamp, and G-Force and toolbar also close.

Examine "toolbar preferences.txt" and it does not appear any different that it looked originally.

(6) Re-open Winamp and start playing the track again.

Once again, toolbar launches, but three lights are once again red.

Select toolbar preferences and "start toolbar when G-Force starts" item is once again UN-CHECKED!!!

I manually check it myself, close the toolbar preferences drawer, and close the toolbar. Then I close Winamp and G-Force also closes.

(7) Re-open Winamp and start playing the track again.

Toolbar launches and lives for about 1/2 second, and then disappears.

I then RMB on G-Force, select "launch G-Force toolbar",and toolbar now launches, lights change from red to green, and values show.

Toolbar preferences show "start toolbar when G-Force starts" CHECKED.

(8) Close Winamp, and G-Force and toolbar also close.

Re-open Winamp, start playing track, and exact same results from (7) repeat. Toolbar flashes briefly and then disappears. RMB on G-Force, select "launch G-Force toolbar", toolbar launches, lights change from red to green and values show.

(9) Select toolbar preferences, UN-CHECK "start toolbar when G-Force starts", close toolbar, and close Winamp.

Re-open Winamp, start playing a track, and now toolbar does NOT start (as it shouldn't, since I just un-checked the "start" item).

RMB on G-Force, launch toolbar, it starts and works properly.

Close Winamp, re-open Winamp and start playing, and again toolbar does NOT start. RMB on G-Force, launch it, toolbar starts and works properly.

(10) Select toolbar preferences, CHECK the "start toolbar when G-Force starts", close toolbar, close Winamp.

Re-open Winamp, start playing a track. G-Force starts, toolbar starts, but one again all lights are red. Close toolbar, RMB on G-Force, launch toolbar, and toolbar starts, red lights change to green and it works properly.

Hello dsperber

It is most unusual for anyone from Sound Spectrum to visit the forum. So the likely hood that your problem will be seen by them is remote indeed.

The best way to bring your difficulties to their attention is to click on the link below:-

http://www.soundspectrum.com/support/contact.html

Copy and paste your post into the message box and, normally you would receive an automated reply by e-mail within 24 to 48 hours, this will include a ticket number.

From then you could normally expect an e-mail from someone at Sound Spectrum in a few days, I say normally because things may be a little slower with the Christmas holidays.

If you have not heard from them in 7 to 10 days then use the link given above, quote your ticket number and, give them a rocket.

Seasons Greetings

First, "I" would start with a complete UNINSTALL and reInstall. I never played around with "Toolbar Preferences.txt" myself, so I am a little out of my element here, but "Preferences (Player).txt" is written to upon CLOSING the previous session, and seems to work. I can't explain why certain entries seems to exist in BOTH "Preferences (Player).txt" AND "Toolbar Preferences.txt". Just somethings to play around with until you get a more authoritative answer.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've submitted the problem report using that link.

Interestingly, the toolbar auto-start (or not) item is in the "general preferences.txt" file. This is the one where that "autostart with Winamp" checkbox lives.

The "toolbar preferences.txt" file is where the toolbar-specific preferences live. So it shouldn't change when I check or uncheck the "autostart with Winamp" item.

Anyway, this is more a cosmetic nuisance than a functional issue. I've now just got it turned OFF by default as my workaround so that the toolbar does not launch in its "dead/red" state. Instead, if I want to see it I will use the manual launch approach described above (after G-Force has launched when Winamp starts playing music)... RMB on G-Force window and select "launch G-Force toolbar". Now toolbar opens, the three lights quickly turn from red to green and it's working correctly, and I'm in business.

I actually had tried the uninstall/reinstall process already, but to no avail. Looks like a real problem to me.

Thanks.

Got a reply from SoundSpectrum. Not surprisingly, they could not reproduce my problem and had not had a similar problem report from anybody else.

I've replied to their reply with a more detailed demonstration of the problem, with screenshots. There is no question that when toolbar is auto-launched with G-Force it starts up with all red lights and stays that way. I have to close it, and then manually re-launch it (right-click on G-Force window and select "launch toolbar") and then it starts with red lights briefly, but they turn to green and all is well.

Or, I can set things to NOT launch is automatically with G-Force. And then when I manually launch it (as above) it will start correctly, the very first time!

So something about the auto-launching with G-Force and the things that go on at that time seems to be preventing the establishing of the TCPIP connection between toolbar and G-Force. But if G-Force is allowed to "stabilize", with toolbar launced manually a bit later, that TCPIP connection problem obviously does not occur.

Now, I've upgraded a second machine which had a 4.1.2 G-Force to 4.1.3. I double-checked that toolbar was or was not auto-launching successfully before the upgrade, and it WAS auto-launching successfully.

After the upgrade to 4.1.3 I checked again, and it STILL auto-launches successfully!!!

So, the problem does NOT seem tied to 4.1.3 per se, but rather to that first machine. Something about the first machine is responsible for the auto-launch anomaly.

I checked network adapters as a possible factor. On the machine that works, there is only one network adapter... namely the Realtek built-in NIC on my motherboard.

On the other computer, the one with the problem, there are TWO network adapter devices... an Intel built-in NIC, and also the Ceton 4-tuner card which shows up as a network device. Don't really think this should affect how auto-launch of toolbar establishes its TCPIP connection to G-Force, but it's at least one difference in the two machines.

Anyway, I've learned to simply accept this anomaly. I just have toolbar set to NOT launch automatically on that machine. If I want it active, I just start if manually after G-Force is running.

Not the end of the world, and doesn't affect G-Force at all.
