G-Force, updates, etc.

Post by Benjammin »

You guys should know, not everyone can understand many of your techno solutions. You accept non-techno money, you should try to cater to their questions with answers that are easier to understand.

Also, how and where do I either find the update, or at least turn off the nag. Have you been having many problems with MP updates?

I'm using GForce Gold 2.7.3
I have a Dell Dimension, 2.4 GHz Intel, 2 Gigs of RAM, Windows XP Pro, all the SP's and Media Player 10, and also run DFX on my player. Are they possibly not compatible? I rarely run any memory hogs other than the OS and my DSL connection while using MP and GForce and DFX.

I can't use some of my MP functions when I've selected GForce. i.e., "add to now playing list", or repositioning my songs inside the now playing list with my mouse. I can work around all that, but ... Also, the only selection I get when I go to the GForce options is "Random." I'd noticed that was the only option available in the nonreg'd version. What did I pay for? Am I missing something?

Thanks

Hi Benjammin,

To update your G-Force software, please download and install the most recent version at the following URL: http://soundspectrum.com/g-force/nph-download.pl. If you are trying to update to G-Force Gold and have lost your license code, you can always retrieve it by using our support tools.

As for Windows Media Player (WMP) displaying only the "random" setting, this is because it would be otherwise impossible WMP to display the millions of "config" patterns that are possible with G-Force. However, you can use your keyboard to access all of G-Force's functionality (including changing configs). Please note, however, that G-Force keystroke controls should be used in fullscreen mode as WMP doesn't always support the capture of keystrokes in the non-fullscreen modes (that's a known limitation of WMP).

As for some basic keystroke commands, you may want to check out the following:
- Use "H" to display the help menu
- Use "Q" and "W" to change colormaps
- Use "A" and "S" to change flowfields
- Use "Z" and "X" to change waveshapes

Regards,
Key

Hi Benjamin. Hardware-wise, you and I are running similar systems under Win-XP Pro-SP2, though my CPUs are a little slower (on several machines), and my memory runs between 0.5 and 1.0 GBytes. I normally run under MusicMatch, though I also run WMP10, Winamp, and Sonique/S2, all with DFX. I have run all versions of G-Force since 2.6.2, including betas, and am currently running 2.8. Although I normally run Gold, I have also tested most of the trial versions.

Although I my computer/PC knowledge and experience is good, my music/visualization knowledge is nill, but I have had no major problems with G-Force, and the few that I have had, have been answered in a timely manner without any disturbing "techno-talk".

Your "question" leaves a lot of questions. What is "MP"? What do "play-lists" have to do with G-Force? What does the relationship between DFX and your player have to do with G-Force?

You are paying your measly $10 to pay for all of the programming improvements that are made to G-Force each year and to escape from the trial-version displays that prod you to upgrade to Gold. If this isn't good enough for you, just uninstall G-Force, or wait until the end of your 1-year Gold subscription and then uninstall, and quityourbitchin! This is, without a doubt, the best $10 you have ever spent in your life!

If you really want to learn a little bit about G-Force, which your original e-mail does not indicate, take the time to read the documentation, which the install-program defaults to display, or hit Shift-H at any time while G-Force, and the documentation window will be opened. You can't learn anything if you are not willing to work at it a little bit! Take care.

The Gold version has the ability to display flow-field unions, and also has about 40 exclusive configs not available in the free version.

Toby's reply

Toby,
Thanks for the reply.
1: MP = Media Player
2: The"now playing list" is the list in Media Player that shows you the list of songs currently listed to be played. You can either load a predetermined playlist, or select songs individually and add them to the now playing list. Now Playing List is the default list anytime you click on a song in Windows Explorer or anywhere else that has Media Player selected as it's default player. When I have multiple songs in the Now Playing list, and don't run GForce, I can click and drag individual songs within the list to arrange them in the order I want them played. Or I can right-click them in Windows Explorer and select "Add to now playing list." However, when I select GForce as my visualization, these features don't work. These are issues software developers usually appreciate hearing about so they can be addressed in future updates.
As for DFX, hopefully it has nothing to do with GForce. I simply mentioned it to explain the environment I was running GForce in. You being the computer wiz that you are should understand and apprecitate that.
And finally, the remark about a "measly $10" was unnecessary. First of all, no amount of money is "measly" if the product it was spent on needs more work. Nowhere in my post did I complain or "bitch." I pointed things out. I asked questions.
To the GForce staff, thank you for the entertaining graphics. I hope you're all professional enough to encourage input from your customers. I have no idea who Toby is or who he represents. I'm hopeful he isn't a staff member. His reply was a bit caustic for a professional reply. and since I found your product through a link built into Media Player, thereby endorsed by Microsoft, I don't think they would consider his response at all professional.

Hi,
Let me assure you that I am in no way associated with SoundSpectrum. I am merely in love with the best visualization software I have ever seen, and yes, I do tend to get caustic on occasion. Unless you are pirating, I am sure you have dozens of software packages that cost you a lot more that G-Force, whose authors expend a lot less effort than Andy does on G-Force, with his many incremental maintenance releases, each a little better than the previous one, and who don't give a damn about your needs and desires. Andy has always been highly responsive about glitches and needed enhancements in G-Force. Take care.

The past is past

Suffice it to say, I truly enjoy my GForce. I think the price is great. The product is great. The few minor shortcomings that -I- have encountered don't detract from the product or the hours of entertainment I get from it.

And in my almost 30 years of BBS'ing, Computing, Internetting, and Data Processing, etc., I've never pirated software. I have no need or desire for pirated software of any kind.

Thanks

Hi,
I was not accusing you of pirating. I Just want you to think of all of the thousands of dollars you have spent on software over those 30 years, and I doubt whether you will find $10 that was better spent than the $10 cost of G-Force. I know I can't.
Take care.

I was never particularly bothered by the nags, since I downloaded the trial version, looked at it for about five minutes, and bought the Gold. I never knew how spoiled I was until I started beta testing, and sometimes I have to test the standard version, nags and all. Yuch !!! Take care.
